What is up Chefs?!

I’m ChefQ…

and like you, I am as passionate about food as you are!

I enjoy cooking & creating new recipes.

I like traveling to new places & restaurants to experience new cuisine.

And I’m passionate about sharing food and travel adventures with others.

Like you…

All good chefs’ dream,

is to open our own restaurant one day.

I certainly did own one…

But…

I never operated a successful restaurant of my own…

Why?

Well, here’s a piece of my story…

See…

Being a chef is somewhat rewarding and exhausting at times don’t you think? Mostly exhausting though lol.

This line of work is stressful. The long hours and demand for this job is high, while the return is minimal.

The “trade your time for a pay check” lifestyle is absolute and there’s no way around it.

While there are a handful of chefs that made it through the ranks to become super successful…

(chefs like Chef Morimoto, Chef Ramsey, Anthony Bourdane)…

it is very rare.

Most of which has nothing to do with cooking, but all about business and connections.

We as passionate chefs have one definite dream and goal…

and that is to open our own restaurant.

To be our own boss…

become an entrepreneurial chef…

and open many more restaurants.

Am I right?

Trust me, I’ve been there.

I’ve been a sushi chef for 17 years… 5 years of which I ran my own sushi restaurant.

I’ve learned a lot!

Here are a few things to expect if someone wants to open a restaurant…

#1 Prepare to be buried in loads of debt!

Restaurants are not cheap to open up….

and with a chef’s low salary, it’s most likely they will be in a big hole of debt to open one up.

#2 They can’t focus on the work that they are passionate about… which is cooking.

Unless…

they are loaded with resources, they can’t afford to hire any key roll players such as…

managers,

accountants,

experience supervisors,

experienced head chefs, etc.

So…

they will most likely have to do everything by themselves. Not to mention the taxes and restaurant upkeeps.

#3 They will work longer hours and have zero time off to spend time with their family.

They will feel obligated to make it work, and it will eat away at their family time.

If they have kids…

they will miss out on seeing them grow up.

They would miss out on that special connection they need to build with their kids while they are small…

and kids…

they grow up fast!

When I sold my restaurant after 5 years, I was planning to open up another one and try to make it work again.

But what really got me thinking…

was when I got married to my beautiful wife.

I was 32 years old, and for the first time, I felt like a grown-up.

I started to think about kids and our own house.

See…

It wasn’t about MY life anymore, but OUR life.

I couldn’t imagine myself opening up another restaurant and working 12 hrs a day 7 days a week…

like how I did it with the restaurant before.

So I started to search for other alternatives.

I decided to research the digital economy to see if there was a way to leverage my passion for food online.

After many trials and errors…

…like eCommerce stores to other gigs…

it just wasn’t working for me.

I felt like I was lost and alone.

I didn’t feel connected to the work.

And my inner chef was itching to come out.

I knew I had to do something related to the one significant skill set

that I’ve spent more than half my life building…

which was cooking.

It was during this time that I came across this ONE video.

It’s as if that person was speaking directly to me…

and from that ONE video, things started to come together for me.

My life goal had opened up, and a clear path to what I needed to do…

was perfectly aligned.

I realized there was a way that I could leverage my passion for cooking & travel…

by doing it as a digital freelancer.

I made a choice that day…

that if I were to ever own a restaurant, I would not work in it because I HAVE to…

but only if I CHOOSE to.

I would cook for others because I wanted to,

and not because I was forced to.

I am now a content creator for food and travel.

I write blogs, share videos, recipes, as well as make cooking videos and travel foodie content.

I truly enjoy working on my own accord…

eating,

traveling,

and at the same time…

being able to be a true chef that’s passionate about food.

All this while getting paid?

Sounds crazy, right?

But it is happening…

Plus, all these things are business expenses that can be written off!

It’s not easy to get started and change, I can tell you that.

I figured, heck, it can’t be worse than working 12hrs a day 7 days a week in the kitchen though, right?

You just need…

a new skillset,

the right mindset,

determination,

and consistency.

Everything else will fall into place.

One thing I definitely learned from all of this is…

Learn to INVEST in yourself first!

Build value for yourself…and the income will follow.
